Consumers in the United States and around the world want more diamond jewelry than ever before, says J. Walter Thompson in a study released by De Beers' U.S. marketing firm. Up from 87 percent in 1998, the study found that 93 percent of married women "have their hearts set on" or "would very much like to get" diamond jewelry. A survey of men, up from 86 percent in 1995, " have their hearts set on" or "would very much like to give" diamond jewelry.
According to statistics from the American Diamond Industry Association (ADIA), the United States, on the other hand, polished diamond imports and exports once again set records in the first half of 1999. Lloyd Jaffe, ADIA chairman, says figures "seem headed in the direction of being another record year," although he noted that many in the diamond industry are still struggling with inadequate profits. Jaffe said the statistics show that the United States is now the "biggest diamond market in the world."
United States polished diamond imports of 6.7 million carats exceeded $4.1 billion in value for the first six months of 1999, a 16.7 percent increase over $2.7 billion for the same period in 1998. The average value of imported diamonds rose 18.4 percent and exports in the first six months of this year increased 6.2 percent to $2.2 billion. The average value per carat rose to over $640 per carat from a lower $462 per carat in 1998. The increase in the average value of diamonds imported by the United States signal a trend that U.S. consumers are buying higher quality diamonds.
