Les Baigneuses d'Avignon Pablo Ruiz Picasso 1881-1973 |
 To achieve this remarkable master-piece Picasso spend an extended honeymoon in Biarritz (France), staying at the Villa La Mimoseraie, home of a member of the Ballets Russes social circle, the Chilean art patron Eugenia Errazuriz. While there, Picasso develops some seaside themes and specifiquely Les Baigneuses d'Avignon, in a Mannerist style (reminiscent of El Greco's elongated figures and of some of Picasso's 1902-1904 work), and a drawing of a Pécheur, similarly Mannerist in style, of about the same time. Picasso is introduced by his hostess to the art dealers Paul Rosenberg and Georges Wildenstein; he executes some Ingresque portraits of their wives and of wealthy society people who come to visit.
